Black-Gold Defeats Pickneyville Falcons After Fifth Inning Rally, 7-4

Eric Steinbeck (27) and Brad Johnson high-five after Johnson’s fifth inning in-the-park two-run homer.

NEW HAVEN, Mo. - After five lead changes in Saturday's second round game at Lions Field, Black-Gold finally pulled out a 7-4 win over Pickneyville Falcons to advance into Sunday’s semifinal game.

Black-Gold pulled off the comeback win, scoring four runs in the fifth after trailing 3-1. Black-Gold went up for good on an RBI single by Kurt Speckhals, scoring the go-ahead run, Cullen Speckhals, to take a 4-3 lead.

Jacob Johnson kept the inning alive with a two out RBI single, giving Black-Gold a two run lead (5-3).

Brad Johnson racked up two RBIs on two hits for Black-Gold. He homered in the fifth inning and singled in the sixth.

Eric Steinbeck got the win for Black-Gold. He allowed four runs off 11 hits in seven innings of work.  Steinbeck struck out six while walking none.

Troy Dowaon couldn't get it done in the circle for the Pickneyville Falcons, taking the loss. He lasted just 4 1/3 innings, walked two, struck out one, and allowed five runs.

The bottom of the first inning saw Pickneyville take an early lead, 1-0, after a leadoff solo blast by Bryant Shute.

Black-Gold added to their lead with two runs in the sixth (7-3). Justin Wurtz started off the inning with a leadoff double.  After a Brad Johnson single, Cullen Speckhals ripped an RBI single, batting in Justin Wurtz.  Brad Johnson would score the second run in the inning off a wild pitch.

After pushing across one run in the bottom of the sixth with just one out, Pickneyville would leave one stranded as they trailed 7-4.

Pickneyville’s Dan Eisonhauson kept his team alive with a one out single in the bottom of the seventh, but Eisonhauson was quickly erased when Steve Linton hit into a game ending 6-4-3 double play, giving Black-Gold their second win on the day.

Black-Gold will face Kelso Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. on Lions Field.

The winner will advance into the finals scheduled for 1 p.m. of the double elimination tournament.  The loser will play at 12 p.m. against the winner from the loser side of the bracket.
