Black-Gold Takes Second Place After Dropping Two Straight To Pickneyville

NEW HAVEN, Mo. - After a solid win over Kelso to advance into this afternoon’s championship game, Black-Gold needed just one win to take first place in their own tournament for the first time since 2009.

In a double elimination tournament, the Pickneyville Falcons would hand Black-Gold their first loss on the weekend, 10-3, forcing a second and decisive championship game.

Justin Wurtz (pictured left) did all he could to give Black-Gold a boost, but it wasn't enough to get past Pickneyville, as Black-Gold lost 8-6, taking second place.

Wurtz got on base two times in the game for Black-Gold. He scored two runs and had one RBI off a solo home run the fourth inning.

Pickneyville’s Bryant Hale got it done in the circle on the way to a win. He allowed one run over 3 1/3 innings. He struck out four, walked one and surrendered three hits.

Pickneyville was sparked by Steve Linton and Daron Dudor, who teamed up for four hits and three RBIs.

Eric Steinbeck ended up on the wrong side of the pitching decision, charged with the loss. He allowed eight runs in six innings, walked none and struck out three.

The top of the first saw Black-Gold take an early lead, 2-0. Wurtz drew a leadoff walk and would score off an RBI triple by Scott Borcherding. Black-Gold tacked on the second run of the inning off a Brad Johnson RBI sacrifice fly to score Borcherding.

Black-Gold built a 5-0 lead after scoring three runs in the fourth sparked by Dean Haeffner’s leadoff single.

Kurt Speckhals (pictured right) followed with an RBI double, scoring Haeffner.

After Ben Held’s sacrifice fly scored Speckhals, Wurtz ripped a two out solo home run.

Steinbeck held Pickneyville hitless through three innings before they exploded in the fourth, scoring seven runs on seven hits to take a 7-5 lead.

After pushing across one run in the top of the seventh, Black-Gold faced just a 8-6 deficit.

An RBI single by Cullen Speckhals sparked Black-Gold's rally. But, Bryant Hale got Haeffner to strike out, lifting his team to a first place finish in the 14th Annual Black-Gold Tournament.
