Owensville, Mo. - The Hermann Bearcats kicked off the 24th Annual Owensville Basketball Tournament with a scrappy first round win over the Salem Tigers 53-49 in a very physical game. The two teams shot a combined 53 free throws, committing 45 fouls, and 41 turnovers.
Hermann’s Collin Hart was the “X” factor in the fourth quarter, exploding for 11 of his 13 points during the last four minutes of the game.
The Bearcats came out scoring the first four points off back-to-back layups from Grant Ruediger and Hart. After Salem’s Adam Ziske hit one of two free throws, Craig Winkelmann broke the 35-35 tie, knocking down one of two from the line giving Hermann a 36-35 lead.
After both teams took turns slapping and fouling each other, Salem was hit with the “X” factor at the 3:33 mark when Hart dropped a dagger from behind the arc, giving Herman a 42-39 lead. The Bearcats extended their lead after Hart drove baseline scoring two points, 30 seconds later on a fast break Winkelmann connected with Hart who scored the layup to give Hermann a 47-39 lead with 1:45 left.
Salem came right back, forcing Hermann into several turnovers that lead to Cody Whitaker ending Hermann’s 8-0 run, draining a three to pull with in five. (47-42)
Hart responded for Hermann, hitting two free throws making it a five-point game.
Hermann let Salem hang around after missed free throws and untimely turnovers as the Tigers came with in three points, 50-47.
Hermann finished off by hitting three of four from the line, advancing to face (1) Pacific on Friday night.
Hart’s 13 points tied a team high with Winkelman and Matt Hug was the third Bearcat in double figures with 12 points.
Salem’s Chad Elliott scored a game high 17 points, going 7-12 from the line.
As a team, Salem was just 19-28 and committed 19 turnovers.
Hermann was not much better from the line, hitting 15-25 and turning the ball over 22 times.
Hermann will play Pacific at 6 p.m. on Friday after they thumped Steelville 69-13.
