In last night’s Girls Hermann Tournament Third Place make up game, Rachel Steinhoff scored 19 points and Stephanie Gerling added a season high 12 points as the Lady Shamrocks defeated St. Clair 44-39.
Steinhoff helped fend off St. Clair’s fourth quarter comeback by hitting four straight free throws in the last 60 seconds after St. Clair pulled within one, giving New Haven their 16th win of the year headed into tonight's battle with Hermann.
New Haven/Sullivan Recap
Stephanie Scheer kisses it off the glass for two of her seven points on the night.
Monday night New Haven had a chance of putting themselves in contention at a Four Rivers Conference title after St. James handed Hermann their first loss on the year, but Sullivan capitalized off a disastrous New Haven fourth quarter to join St. James undefeated in conference play. See FRC standings below.
Monday night’s final score does not reflect how close of a game it was. New Haven’s Stephanie Scheer’s three pointer to end the first half tied the game, 22-22.
Midway through the third period Sullivan jumped out to their largest lead, 32-26, before Stephanie Gerling answered with a three point play to end the quarter with New Haven trailing by three, 32-29.
After Sullivan hit one of two free throws (33-29) to begin the fourth quarter New Haven’s Kayla Meyer scored inside and pulling New Haven within two, 33-31. On the ensuing play after a missed play by Sullivan, Steinhoff’s baseline drive tied it at 33-33 with five minutes remaining.
Still tied at the four minute mark Sullivan would convert a three point play off an offensive rebound, taking a three point lead, 36-33, when the Lady Eagles stepped up their defensive pressure.
Sullivan would force New Haven into five straight turnovers, scoring 14 unanswered points over a two minute stretch. (47-33) New Haven was forced to foul but the Lady Eagles made their free throws and New Haven unable to recover and a final score of 53-37.
Sullivan improved to 17-2,3-0 while New Haven fell to 15-6,2-2.
The Lady Shamrocks turn right around after last night’s win over St. Clair to face Hermann in round one of the “County Line Showdown” before the boys collide tomorrow night, which is also Homecoming.
