School Records Fall At State Sectional Track Meet

Ereka Bailey breaks school record in the triple jump and long jump.

PRINCIPIA HIGH SCHOOL - Seth Schenck continued his dominance in the open 800 meter by shattering his own school record by two seconds, running a 1:57.89, but Schenck was not the only one breaking school records.

Sophomore Ereka Bailey advances to the State Track Meet for the first time after breaking the school record in the Long Jump (15-08.25) and Triple Jump (33-08.25), placing third in both events.

Aside from Bailey and Schenck’s school record breaking performances, the biggest surprise on Saturday was Beth Schenck (pictured right) advancing to State in dramatic fashion, winning in a “jump off” by clearing 4-10 and grabbing fourth place in the High Jump after she came in seeded second to last.

Saturday was the first time this year she had cleared 4-10, tying her personal best.  (Only top four advance to state)

More about the girls at Sectionals.

Both the 4x400 (Rachel Steinhoff, *Molly Munsinger (Nicole Zeitzmann), Taylor Covington, and Hannah Pruessner) and 4x800 meter relay teams (Hannah Pruessner, Taylor Covington, Hannah Kruse, and Kayla Borcherding) advanced to state with the 4x800 taking second and the 4x400 finishing first.

Junior Taylor Covington, (pictured left) who also runs the final leg in both relays, won the 400 meter dash and the 800 meter run, where she is seeded first after running a career best 2:24.82, improving her time by over six seconds.

Despite suffer a recent leg injury, Molly Munsinger was able to qualify in the 400 meter dash and 200 meter dash, finishing third in both events.

“Molly did not run in the 4x400 meter relay on Saturday.  We wanted to rest her as much as possible but she will be running at State.  Nicole Zeitzmann did a great job, coming into to run for Molly”, said Coach John Tucker.

Boys at Sectionals.

On the boys side, Seth Schenck also finished second in the 1600 meter run behind the defending state champion Seth Brown from La Plata.  Senior Zach Grater was New Haven’s only other athlete to qualify in an open race by running a career best 10:39.87 to finish third in the 3200 meter run.

Pictured right: Seth Schenck and Seth Brown of La Plata stride for stride during the 800 meter run.  Brown won the 1600 meter and is defending State Champion - Schenck the 800 meter and defending State Champion.  Saturday the two will face off one last time.

Both the 4x800 (1st place) (Seth Schenck, Zach Grater, Keven McDowel, and Jon Stone) and 4x400 (2nd Place) meter relay teams (Seth Schenck, Keven McDowell, Alex Majors, and Jon Stone) survived sectionals to advance to this weekends State Meet in Jefferson City, Mo.

Coach Tucker said, “Both the girls and boys 4x400 relay events are going to be really good races.  Looking at results from other Sectionals,  the top seven girls teams are separated by three seconds and the top nine boys teams are all within four seconds of each other.”

In the girls 4x400 New Haven, who finished second last year behind defending State Champions from Midway both ran a 4:17 in Sectionals, which is the top time.  However right behind them is Polo who ran a 4:18 then you have five teams that all ran 4:20.

On the boys side, Stewartsville comes in with the best time of 3:36.  New Haven ran 3:39, finishing second behind North Shelby who ran 3:38 along with four other schools from across the state.

Coach Tucker said, “It will be a very interesting State Meet.  In years past there is generally two maybe three teams that kind of stand out but this year there are so many good teams.  It is just going to be a lot of fun to watch and hopefully both our teams can advance on to Saturday.”
