Silex escapes New Haven remaining undefeated

Kayla Meyer scores two of her career high 12 points in Thursday's loss to Silex.

New Haven, Mo. – Thursday night’s thriller marked the second time New Haven's had a chance to spoil a team's undefeated season.

In December it was St. James who snuck away, 41-38, and Thursday night Silex was one pass away from having their 14 game winning streak come to an end.

New Haven’s Kayla Meyer scored a career high 12 points and nine rebounds, helping to hold Silex well below their average of 34 rebounds per game to just 17 rebounds.

Silex clung to a one point-lead, 44-43, after Rachel Steinhoff hit two free throws with 33 seconds left. Silex’s Leah Miller answered with a layup as she was fouled and a chance to make it a two possession game.  Miller missed the free throw, which lead to a Silex foul, putting Steinhoff at the line.

After Steinhoff hit both free throws to bring New Haven within one, 46-45, Silex turned it over with 12 seconds left, giving New Haven control of their own destiny.

However, Silex picked Kierstin Monzky’s pass as she tried to hit Steinhoff leading to Silex running out the clock to pick up their 15th win, 46-45.

New Haven held Silex to the second fewest points they've scored, behind Elsberry who held them to 32 points in Silex’s second game of the year.  Silex is averaging 58 points per game, a ridiculous 34 rebounds, and snagging 18 steals.

Silex was led by senior guard Natalie Fleming, scoring a game high 23 points, but was held to two rebounds.  Fleming averages a double double, scoring 22 points per game and 11 rebounds.

Steinhoff led New Haven with 17 points, finishing eight of eight from the charity strip.  With Thursday's loss New Haven falls to 10-6, but are 4-2 since Christmas break.

Monday night New Haven plays their first round game of the Hermann Tournament against number seven seeded Wright City.

New Haven is seeded second behind the Hermann Lady Bearcats, who has won both the Montgomery County and South Callaway tournaments.

Game time for both teams is set for 6 p.m. New Haven will play at the middle school and Hermann at the high school.
