UNION, Mo. - The Student Service Center at East Central College has been bustling with activity this summer. To accommodate new and returning students, a special Saturday registration session is set for August 2. Staff will be available from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.
Fall semester classes begin Wednesday, August 13.
Although the priority deadline for financial aid was July 1, students can still apply for financial aid and wait for disbursement after the start of the fall semester. In 2013-14, ECC disbursed $17.3 million in financial aid to students through scholarships, state money, grants, veteran benefits, loans and other sources. Tuition must be paid before classes start, so students are encouraged to utilize our payment plan so they can spread the cost out over several months or until their financial aid is in place.
"For many students, starting at a community college is going to be their best bet," stated Nathaniel Mitchell, ECC's director of admissions. "They can begin college in a more nurturing environment with smaller classes and instructors whose primary responsibility is teaching. It's a great place to complete general education requirements and an associate degree before moving on to a university."
A variety of classes and programs are available for students still deciding on a major. In addition to outstanding instruction in the basics of English, math, science, and humanities, ECC offers dozens of degree and certificate majors in career and technical fields that can lead directly to jobs.
Student services personnel in admissions, advisement, financial aid and registration will be available to assist students. Potential new students can also take the placement test that morning. Staff will be on hand to assist students and families with completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. The Student Service Center is also open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Fridays from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
In-district students pay just $95 per credit hour for tuition and general fees. The rate for out-of-district students is $130 per credit hour. Some courses also have additional lab and technology fees.
To reserve a spot at the placement test, which requires a photo ID, potential students should call 636-584-6588 by noon this Friday, August 1. Questions can also be sent to email@example.com or visit www.eastcentral.edu/discoverecc.
Food, refreshments and door prizes will be provided during the event and those attending can also register to win an Apple iPad mini.
